Richard J. Pope Sr.

CDR Richard John Pope, Sr. USN ret.

CDR Richard John "Dick" Pope, Sr. USN ret., of Savannah passed away on Friday, 30 November 2012 at St Joseph's/Candler Hospital. Dick was born in Cleveland, OH, and was raised in Wapokoneta, OH and Bay City, MI. He was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, OH, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He proudly served as a Naval Aviator, and retired as a Commander in the Naval Reserve. His distinguished career as a banker in Jacksonville and Savannah, GA will be long remembered. Starting in the commercial credit training program at Barnett Bank of Jacksonville, he rose to executive management and served as an executive with Barnett Bank, Southeast Bank, and SouthTrust Bank in Jacksonville, and with National Bank of Commerce in Savannah, GA. Dick received the Bell Ringer award from the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, was a longtime member of the Meninak Club of Jacksonville, served on boards of several Jacksonville organizations, and was a member of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. A lifelong artist, Dick enjoyed painting coastal landscapes. His prodigious talent is evident in his work. Most of all, Dick loved his family, was a faithful Christian man, and those of us whose lives he touched are blessed. He is survived by his wife, Yolanda; daughter, Kimberly Pope Rainey of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; son, Richard John Pope, Jr. of Chicago, IL; and brother Daniel Kirby Pope.
A service will be held at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM, on Thursday, 6 December 2012.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, and to the Naval Aviator's Wives' Memorial Scholarship at http://www.tailhook.org/Foundation.html.Selah.

GUEST BOOK

Kim and Richard, Only recently did I learn of Dick's passing and was so surprised and saddened. I was his secretary for several years at Southeast Bank back in the '80's. Your dad was a wonderful man and a great boss, and I wanted to extend my deepest sympathy to you both.

- Deborah Fanning, Jacksonville, FL

Kim and Richard, I am so sorry for the loss of your father. My thoughts and prayers are your family.
